Can i leave my checked bag at the airport and come back and get it the next day?
i am flying from lax to new orleans, and my flight lands very close to an engagement i am supposed to go to. can i get off the plane, leave my bag at the airport, and come back and get it the next day? do they check to see if you were actually on the flight when they hold bags? any charges applied or can i just say that i got on an earlier flight or something? sorry some clarifications, i am checking the bag from san francisco, flying to lax, and then to new orleans. i do not need my big when i arrive in new orleans so i was hoping to leave it at the airport and go back to the baggage area and pick it up the next day. hope this makes sense because i have to be somewhere and dont have time to stand around for 30 minutes waiting for the bags to be unloaded from the plane.

Technically, you cannot leave the airport after checking you bag, regardless of whether or not you plan to make your connecting flight. But I don't think they watch the front doors or anything...

some airlines will let you check it in the day before but usually only if your flight is before 11.30 or something. u would need 2 check

Though airlines would probably prefer that you pick up your bags when you depart the airport, there are situations where luggage cannot be picked up at the time of arrival. (Most commonly, this occurs when baggage doesn't show up on the same flight as the passenger.) In these instances, the bags are usually held in the baggage office for that particular airline. You'll likely need to show your claim tags in order to pick up your luggage, but they typically will place them there until they are claimed by the owner.

Based on the routing, you are more than likely flying Southwest Airlines. They have a pretty big baggage office in MSY. I know this because I worked at the MSY airport for about 10 years. Anyways, when your bags come off the belt and are not claimed, they will line them up outside their office in the hopes that you come and claim them. After a certaim amount of time passes, they will check the manifest of the flight to see if you boarded the plane. When they notice that you were on board, they will usually try to contact you and ask where you are so that you can come and pick up your bags. Be honest with them and tell them that you had to leave really quickly. They will lock the bags up in their baggage service office and when you are ready to get them, you can just go there with your baggage claim stubs and get the bags from the office. Just an FYI, if you are missing anything out of your bags when you get them back, the airline WILL NOT be responsible as their contract of carriage states that you have four hours to make any damage of pilferage claims to your bag. Don't leave it there for longer than a day though. Most airlines will send bags that aren't claimed within a day to their central baggage office which is always located in another city!!
