How much would a USA road trip coast to coast cost?
Okay so I am from Ireland and I was hoping to do a road trip from east to west coast America. Now here is the route, well the major cities of the route just to get the idea in your head, we will be stopping at smaller cities and towns: flight into Boston - New York - Philly - Washington - Miami - New Orleans - Houston - San Antonio - Las Vegas - LA - San Fran There is going to be a group of about 5 or 6 of us. We plan on renting a minivan or suv for this trip and the trip will be 60 days in total. Now I think to rent an suv for that long is about รข‚¬2000, but that will be between 5 or 6 of us. Could someone tell me roughly how much this trip will cost, you can exclude the cost of flights and rental car, I just want a rought estimate per person how much it will cost for 60 days for food, drink, petrol and general spending?

I'd think you'd be more like $4000 for a decent sized SUV. $2000 might get you a pretty basic saloon car. Food is cheaper over there than here, but it depends what you eat. If you're always stopping at fast food places then it's going to cost around $20 per person per day, but if you make your own and carry it with you then you could probably quarter that. Fuel is cheaper too, but not much. Coast to Coast is around 3500 miles of road. An SUV might manage 25MPG, and it costs $3 per gallon, approximately, so fuel should come to around $500 for the trip, but that depends on your exact route choice, diversions, and car MPG. General Spending, well that depends on what you do!! I'd say that to have fun you should allow around $300-$500 per week between you. So my estimates are: SUV hire: $4000 Food: 5 people x $20 x 60 days = $6000 Fuel: $500 Spending : $400 x 8 weeks = $3200 Total: $14000 Check out the link below for a similar story to yours.

A meal in an average cafe or restaurant might cost an individual about ten dollars. It could be more or less depending on where you stay and how much you order, certainly, but that's an average. You can, of course, buy some food at the grocery stores and prices will vary greatly depending on if you are near a city or in a rural area. A gallon of milk is about 2 dollars. A loaf of bread is about 2 dollars and a pack of lunch meat (a pound of ham, turkey or beef) is about 6 dollars. You can get several meals out of that, alone. Gas is roughly $2.50 a gallon, and those minivans don't get many miles to a gallon. Compare vehicles based on their ratings. Alcohol is expensive, a six pack of beer is probably 7 or 8 dollars if bought at a grocery store, 3-5 dollars if bought at a restaurant or bar. Have a fun trip.....begging on street corners is always permissible if you run out of cash!
