You don't say when you want to travel or for how long, and those factors matter a lot. There is no secret, magic website with the "cheap" fares. You have to do the research. Check travel sites like airgorilla and expedia, and also check the airline sites. I have almost always found the best fares on the airline sites and NOT on the travel sites. Also check the fares for splitting your trip into segments, and be as flexible as possible with travel dates. For example, searching New Orleans to Chennai in August gives a fare of more than $2300 (round trip, incl taxes & fees) However, New Orleans to JFK in August is $287 on Delta (round trip, incl taxes & fees), and JFK (New York) to Chennai for the same dates in August is $1404 on Air India via Delhi (round trip, incl taxes & fees) for a total airfare of $1691. A real travel agency can sell you the ticket all-together, or you can buy the segments seperately online. Good luck!
