Cheap way to travel from new orleans,LA to San diego, CA?

ok, i want to go visit a friend before i go away for a while with the army, i want to go to san diego but i am in new orleans, la... but i dont have much money to spend also i dont have a specific date to go i was thinking anywhere around the end or middle of june to biggining or mid july... any where around there, which ever comes cheaper. but i looked at Amtrak, Greyhound, and flight prices ... and i have never took a bus or train btu willing to do it if it the cost isnt much difference, because for some reason there are some prices that would be as much as if i took a plane. please give me some other ideas or comments about this:) thank you.

The train that runs between New Orleans and Los Angeles only runs three times a week each way. It is called the Sunset Limited and departs New Orleans every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. TO go all the way to San Diego would require a train change in LA to a Surfliner train. The lowest cost for both trains (New Orleans to Sand Diego) in coach is around $170. It would be about a 49 hour trip leaving NO at 11:30am and arriving LA at 8:30am two days later. I know nothing about riding the bus. I would HIGHLY recommend the train. You will not be stuck in your small seat the whole trip. You can wander about the train. Sit in the lounge or eat in the dining car. You can also get a sleeper room (this would give you a private room and all your meals are included). Though it would add a significant cost. Check out www.amtrak.com. Put in New Orleans to San Diego and see what the prices are. Try different days, you will get different prices.
