How early can I check my bags for a flight

How early can I check my bags for a flight?

I am returning home to Florida from New Orleans on a 5 a.m. flight. Since my daughter (who lives in New Orleans with my ex wife) would be a terror if awaken that early, i'm considering possibly getting to the terminal about 7 hours early and catching a nap at my gate. Will the airline let me check my bags that early? Beeeep... 24 hours is not right. I just called the airline (continental). So... The first person to say 4 hours before gets the points.

4 to 6 hours prior to scheduled departure, depending on the individual airline's policy.

We looked at doing the same thing this September as I was travelling with kids and 4 am was way to early. The earliest we were told was 5 hours beforehand. It was with Frontier Airlines.
