Experienced travelers: do you think the cost of this flight will go back down

Experienced travelers: do you think the cost of this flight will go back down?
So my friend wants to come visit me after Christmas and he would be flying either from Denver or San Francisco to New Orleans or Gulfport. The tickets were at about $250 two weeks ago and now they are up over $400. The travel dates aren't flexible, but the airports are. I am wondering if as the airlines add more flights to accommodate demand for travel if the fares will go back down. I imagine that over the next two months there will be some fluctuation. What is the best way to get the cheapest flight?

In all honesty, airlines don't add extra capacity as you describe, and when they do it is based on available aircraft being swapped around where flexibility allows, which isn't much if you have to change around crew etc.. So, no I doubt they wil go down to the $250 price seen 2 weeks ago, although you might see them reduce below $400 if demand starts to drop (that a big IF). Check comparison sites like http://www.kayak.com or http://www.skyscanner.net, even google cheap flight tickets to see what you can find, but it is very much supply and demand around Christmas.

I see in your question that you mentioned the airline adding more flights to accommodate the stronger demand. It is very unlikely that any airline would do this. An airline will want an airline 100% full for months and months before they add any more flights. I recommend flying from San Francisco or Denver to New Orleans. It will cost more to fly into Gulfport since it is a smaller city, and usually airfares are more expensive. Try having your friend fly on a Saturday, Tuesday, or Wednesday for the cheapest fares. For cheap tickets, try: Hotwire.com Expedia.com Travelocity.com Priceline.com Bing.com/travel Good luck!
