Check in procedures for international flights

Check in procedures for international flights?
I'm flying internationally from New Orleans to Paris for the first time in July with Delta. #1: Does the initial check-in at New Orleans check me in and provide boarding passes for both flights (New Orleans to Atlanta, Atlanta to Paris) or do I have to claim my bags in Atlanta and check in again for the flight to Paris. Also, after arriving in Atlanta, am I allowed to leave the terminal area and then return for my flight?

The initial check-in usually gives you all the boarding passes and checks your bags through to Paris, but only Delta can answer that for sure. You can leave the terminal in Atlanta but remember that you'll have to go through security all over again when you come back in so allow time for that and keep all your tickets/boarding pass/passport/ID handy, and don't buy anything outside that you can't bring in your carry-on if the checked luggage is still in the airline's hands.

First, get to the airport in New Orleans 2 full hours before your flight is scheduled to depart. Really. You will get boarding passes for both flights when you check-in at New Orleans. The Delta agent will also verify your passport at New Orleans. Your bags will be transferred to the Paris flight automatically. Do watch to make certain the Delta agent tags your bag(s) with the correct 3-letter transfer/destination codes: Atlanta is ATL and Paris is CDG. You can leave the airport in Atlanta if you want to go outside. However, Atlanta airport is huge and the flight to Paris will depart from E terminal - the one most distant from the airport exit. Better is to just go to E terminal and stay there. If you have a long wait between flights (more than a couple of hours) consider buying a one-day pass for Delta's lounge. There is also a lounge at New Orleans' airport so you could buy it there and also use the pass while waiting for the Atlanta flight to depart. http://www.delta.com/traveling_checkin/airport_information/delta_sky_club/index.jsp Bon voyage!
