I think I miss New Orleans

I think I miss New Orleans?
I don't really know why I'm posting this on yahoo answers, but here it goes... A few months ago, I went to check some colleges out.. and one of my options was Tulane University in New Orleans. So, my parents and I take a flight out from California (my home state) to tour their campus for about 3 days. And while I'm there, I fall completely in love with Tulane... like I kept screaming in my head "I WANNA GO HERE, I WANNA GO HERE." It wasn't just the campus though, it was those mansion-like houses, the humidity, and the swamps.. I don't know, you know, it was so different from CA. I also had so much family history there that I could feel proud of(not recent family, but some distant ancestors). Of course, even though I wanted to go to Tulane oh so badly. My parents didn't let me go because they were concerned with TU not being a safe campus (we saw a random newspaper that said 7 people had been shot, and after driving through NO, it looked kind of scary in some areas). So, I guess, after months since I've been there... I feel like I'm leaving something behind. I'm going to college in CA, but I still wished that I could've had the chance to go to college in NO. I mean, I don't believe in fate or anything, but it's such a strong feeling. I'd only been there for three days. But I really miss New Orleans, Louisiana. So, the question is.. What do you think about this? Do you think I'll have a chance to go back eventually?

Tulane has a safe campus. New Orleans is still recovering from Katrina, when 80% of the city was flooded. Some neighborhoods have recovered more than others and the ones that are not doing so well still have numerous abandoned houses. In the rest of the country abandoned houses = bad neighborhood and that can mislead people who don't understand the post-Katrina situation. Reality in New Orleans is that almost all of the serious violent crime (murders, shootings, stabbings) happens > within < the illegal drug community and is motivated by disputes over crack cocaine. Almost all the rest of the violent crimes are "domestic" incidents. That doesn't make the crimes OK but the average resident or visitor (incl. college students) doesn't have to worry about it. Other crime is at or below the national average for cities and usually below. The New Orleans news media does NOT do a good job of explaining the motives behind violent crime (maybe true everywhere in the USA but I know it happens in New Orleans).. It's partly for political correctness reasons and partly because the news media > wants < to make you afraid. They > want < you to be glued to the TV/whatever out of fear. For example, the news story you saw ("7 people had been shot, and after driving through NO") almost certainly failed to mention the incidents were > not < random and all of the victims & perpetrators were people in the drug trade. Stay away from people who buy/sell/use crack cocaine and your chances of being the victim of anything worse than a parking ticket are very, very low. Do the research yourself, do well at the college you are currently attending, and talk to your parents again about transferring to Tulane. Note that many parents are more concerned about their kids for the first two years of college, and it's less of a concern by the junior year. It's also easier (at least for you) to be far away from home at age 21 than it is at age 18 or 19. Hint: If you even might transfer to Tulane later then check with Tulane to be certain which courses at your current college will transfer. Avoid taking courses that won't transfer to Tulane. Best wishes!

I completely understand. Tom Piazza wrote a wonderful book called "Why New Orleans Matters." I highly recommend it. He wrote it right after Hurricane Katrina. There is a quote in the introduction that explains how you feel: "...of a city one knew and recognized, lived in and loved the way you love a person. New Orleans inspries the kind of love that very few other cities do. Paris, maybe Venice, maybe, San Fancisco, New York....The list is not that much longer." I have been lucky enough to visit all of those cities, and more, and completely agree. I love New Orleans like a person, and mourned after the hurricane, and continue to mourn a bit. I visit when I can and I encourage you to find a way to visit, too. I went to college in CA, too. Where are you going?

I believe that every person has an inner voice that steers them in a certain direction for a specific reason. I don't think it's fate so much as it would be instinct. If that voice says that NO is for you, then continue to make visits during your college years so that you can get to know the city. When you graduate, she'll still be here and you can satisfy your yen to live here.
