Flight transfer time, help?
This is my first flight and I'm going to be flying from Reagan Intl to New Orleans. My transfer time is one hour. Is this enough time? I chose one that had the longest time possible because the other flights had transfer times of 30 mins or less. And also, how does Air Tran handle checked baggage during transfers? Do they transfer the baggage for you, or do you pick it up yourself between flights? Thanks! It's a transfer in Atlanta. Everyone seems to transfer there lol

they will transfer for you if you are on the same airline

Though you don't specifically mention where your transfer is, I'll have to assume that your 1-hour layover is in Atlanta, which is the AirTran hub where DCA-MSY passengers would typically transfer at. That having been said, as long as your flight from DCA is on time, 1 hour should be more than enough time to make the transfer. You don't have to claim your luggage and re-check it -- when you check in with AirTran at DCA, they check the luggage the whole way through and will transfer it for you at ATL. (This is standard practice on all airlines, in fact, as long as all flights are on the same ticket.) If your flight from DCA is late and causes you to miss your connection, AirTran will accommodate you on the next available flight to New Orleans. The vast majority of AirTran gates are located in Terminal C at ATL (gates C1 through C20), with a few gates in Terminal D. Even if you have to transfer terminals, Terminals C and D are connected, so it won't take you very long to get between them.

Listing the stop-over airport would help in giving you more accurate info, but 1 hour is plenty of time. Flights usually start boarding 30 mins. prior to flight-time, and the gate doesn't close until just before departure (approx 10 mins.). I recently changed planes at O'Hare Intl. with only 27 mins. between flights, and the arrival and departure were in different terminals. Anyone familiar with ORD knows how tough this is to do there. At any rate, your bags will be transferred automatically for you, and you will have ample time to make your connection. I hope this helps.
